The rate at which technology advances is astounding. We live today
with tools that were unimaginable for the previous generations.
This rate of advance is in complete contrast with the rate
of evoluation of the human species. In terms of the evolutionary
clock, it was only yesterday that we were living in small tribes.
This is one of the central causes in the modern day feeling of loneliness or
lack of sense of purpose.
The advancement made in technology allows for large societies and higher
population densities. Amongst these modern advancements that make densily
populated regions possible, are highly productive farms together with vehicles
of distribution and the verticalization of space. Thus technology has granted us
high population densities.
The style of life in the city is very different from small tribal life. One
can walk down the same street every day, and see thousands of unknown faces.
While a tribesman would certainly know all of his clansmen by sight, and who
knows, even by smell. This modern life style has only been around for a blink of
the evolutionary eye, thus it is to be expected that our evolutionary traits are
not in synch with this contemporary life. But rather, we are more in sync,
evolutionary speaking, with the tribal lifestyle.
In the tribe, our sense of purpose was linked with that of the tribe, and
xenophobism was in high. Defend those you know, display unwarranted suspicion of
those you do not. A mode of thinking not compatible with modern life.
Thus modern man must struggle to live with his incompatible instincts and the modern way life
that stemmed from our technological advances, and
the by-product is depression, lack of purpose and loneliness.
